Here’s a quick photo review of our Gerber Moment Fixed Blade Knife… Gerber Gear item number 31-002197.
I’ve had this knife for about a year and a half now and found it to be a useful mid-sized knife for daily carry. It’s a fully capable tool that handles most of the cutting around the house, campsite and shop. It really excelled as a field dressing knife during the last waterfowl season! Breasting-out mallards seems to be the perfect task for this blade.
I’m a sucker for small and mid-sized fixed blades and found this knife to be one of my favorite designs. The blade has held up surprisingly well for a sub-$30 full tang knife. The grip is extremely comfortable however the soft material does collect nicks and bruises …I don’t consider this to be an issue, it’s a tool.
The bead-blasted blade measures .131″ in thickness. The low luster finish and the exposed pommel are a couple of features that I appreciate having on my EDC blades. Gerber specs this steel as 5Cr15MOV which is about equal to 420HC. Overall length is 8.63″ . Our knife and factory sheath together weigh in at 6.7 oz.
As usual, I didn’t have any faith in the sheath that was provided with this knife. I’ve found that 99% of the sheaths provided with these budget knives are basically just for storage. That’s OK..I have kydex and making a sheath to fit my needs is a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. The dangler sheath in the photo below is pretty much my standard setup these days. I can wear it high or low depending on what I’m doing that day or it can be hung from a pack.
Overall I think it’s a fine knife that fits the budget. It just needs a sheath that can handle some abuse.
