Check out our initial review and first use of the SogFari 10″ machete from SOG.
We had some late winter brush clearing to do along our property lines so I was able to put this tool to a quick and limited test. I needed a nice folding saw to keep in the cargo van and happened to find SOG’s Woodland Kit at one of the local lumber yards. The kit came with the SogFari Machete, the SOG Wood Saw and sheaths for both tools.
Here are the photos plus some of my thoughts:
The belt shown above on the sheath is not included with the machete. The 10″ tanto blade measures .100″ thickness. I was happy to see the exposed tang on the pommel end! The rubber grip is comfortable to use.
A great chopping tool! This is a green pin cherry trunk. The machete made a quick job out of dropping it.
I’m not a big fan of “saw-back” knives or other tools. This blade does OK at sawing. I think SOG did a better job than most others at adding this saw feature. The blade is .100″ thick and the teeth measure .125″ at their widest point so there was minimal blade pinching. You can see the nice wide kerf it leaves. I wanted to see how well the saw functioned otherwise I would have just chopped this sapling down.
Overall, I really like this machete! I have been wanting to check out some of SOG’s products and was happy to get a deal on this one. I’ve overlooked machetes in the past but after seeing some decent smaller machetes (and how others are modifying them for survival use) I’m personally starting to see them as a better alternative to the larger bowie and camp-style knives.
The only real gripe I have is the sheath…this is my usual gripe with most brands and it’s easily fixed with a custom sheath.
The sheath opening is a bit awkward.. The user has to squeeze it flat to insert the blade. Eventually this sheath will be shredded.
Once the blade is inserted the sheath holds it well. I do not like the velcro strap. But like I mentioned, this is just an opportunity to make a custom rig. Maybe that can be covered here in a future post.
I bought this machete in a Combo Kit at Menards on closeout. I was just wanting a folding limb saw but was able to get this machete at almost no additional cost. I checked Amazon and they do not offer the kit that I purchased, it may have been something that is not available anymore or only available at certain outlets. Since Amazon normally has the best pricing here is the link for just the machete but while you are on the Amazon site you might want to see what combo deals there are:
